The city of Fremantle is more or less a “port city” located in Western Australia.

From its history, you will realize that it was the first settlement of the Swan River colonists back in 1829 and was later declared to be a city in 1929. It has a population of approximately 26,000 people.

Fremantle city is named after a Captain – Charles Fremantle, who was the English naval officer who had pronounced possession of Western Australia back in the colonial days. The captain had established a camp at the site.

Even to date, the city contains well-preserved buildings (dating back to the 19th-century) and many other heritage features which make the city a great tourist destination.

The city’s rich history is evident once you lay foot in the town as it is well preserved, including colonial era buildings that were built by convicts and their prisons are also present. The Fremantle prison was actually was actually one of the most notorious during the British Empire.  There are also museums that have collected samples like the

  • The Round House

This is the oldest remaining building in Western Australia, and it was built as a gaol. It has 8cells and a gaoler’s residence. There is a tunnel that constructed under the round house, as part of their whaling operations, so as to provide access to the town to the whalers.

  • Fremantle markets

The markets opened in 1897. They formed a zone that provided handicrafts, specialty foods, dining halls, fish and vegetable markets. The area also hosts various street performers who enlighten the mood of the town.

In general, Fremantle is a vibrant and diverse city. It is home to some of the most beautiful heritage buildings, great beaches, delicious seafood, talented artists and designers.

Fremantle offers seven day shopping and a fantastic array of food, fun and entertainment for all ages.

When visiting Fremantle, be sure to see the spectacular WA Maritime Museum, Fremantle Prison, Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour, Cappuccino Strip and not forgetting the historic Fremantle Markets. Fremantle city harbours some of the most talented designers who provide a unique shopping experience. The shopping areas are open for business seven days a week with late night trading on Fridays, while even the popular Fremantle Markets are open Friday to Sunday.
