There is great variety of fishes and coral and millions of a great share of marine animals are found this reef. Some of the rare animals found here are such as the humpback whales, the dugongs, the manta rays, the whale shark is also found in this wonder of the world. The waters of Ningaloo are also breeding grounds for the whale shark that comes all the way here to breed. To get the best places to view the whales is off the Tantabiddi and Mangrove Bay areas. For your information the Whale Sharks are not dangerous they eat planktons and you can swim in the Ningaloo Reef without the fear of the sharks snapping out your life.

One of the greatest experiences in the Ningaloo Reef is the diving schools for the vast majority of visitors that come to the Ningaloo Reef and cannot swim. Other ways of veiwing the reef is thrrough glass bottomed boats, there are also semi submersible boats depending on what one prefers.

From Perth the Ningaloo Reef is accessed via the Brand Highway. It is one long road drive. For those who would prefer to fly the closest point to fly to reach the Ningaloo Reef is Learmonth Airport 40km south of Exmouth. Carnarvon is 130km from Gnaraloo, 240km from Coral Bay, and 350km from Exmouth. Carnarvon does have its own coral to snorkel on, right next to shore 40km north of town at the Blowholes (Point Quobba).

This is a massive park that was formed after Sherbrooke Forest, Doongalla Reserve and Ferntree Gully National Park were merged. This massive park covering over 3, 200 hectares was combined to help in protecting a population of famous lyrebirds, fauna, the forests themselves and fern gullies of the ranges.

The ranges were originally used by the Bunurong and Woewurrong Aboriginal tribes as an important source of timber and this led to much of the forest being cleared. It is until late last century that farming was established in the region as roads and railways were built. The ‘Puffing Billy’ narrow-gauge line from Ferntree Gully to Gembrook was opened in 1900.

This area became very popular with tourists from the 1870s. Fern Tree Gully was first reserved as a park in 1882 and other areas followed. The present national park was established in 1987.

Dandenong Ranges National Park is rich in wildlife with various native bird species, native mammals, reptiles and amphibian species recorded that are quite mesmerizing on sight, the Lyrebird being the most famous inhabitant. People from all over the world are fascinated by the ability of this bird to mimic the calls of other bird species. This species can even pull off a great dancing display and the beautiful tail of the males is quite impressive. Sulphur-crested Cockatoos, Crimson Rosellas, Laughing Kookaburras, Eastern Yellow Robins, Yellow-faced Honeyeaters and Pied Currawongs are some of the native birds most frequently seen in the park.

There are Yellow-bellied Gliders and tiny feather-tail gliders in the park whose work is evident as you will realize many scarred eucalyptus trees – they do this during night time feeding and also while making homes in the hollows of mature trees. Tree Goannas can also be found in the park.

The plant communities in the park are remnants of the original vegetation that has receded over the last 150 years with the rapid growth of Melbourne’s suburbs. The park has about six major vegetation communities including a number of indigenous plant species. The park is particularly well known for its spectacular Mountain Ash forests and fern gullies.

In any discussion of Broome’s history, one cannot ignore the regions’ indigenous Australians who were known as the Aboriginals or Aborigines. Their claim to the lands that would become known as Dampierland, Roebuck Bay and finally Broome, span forty thousand years. 

In 1688, when William Dampier first visited “New Holland” (that is how the rest of the world referred the region as), the first seeds were sown that would forever change the lives of the indigenous people in the region. The constant and fundamental cultural clashes between the two people eventually led to the exploitation of the regions original inhabitants, especially in the early days of the pearling industry when Aboriginals were forced to become skin divers for pearl shell.

Any visitor to Broome can immediately recognise the legacy of place names and landmarks named after William Dampier (who was the navigator, explorer, buccaneer and distinguished chronicler of the seven seas). He is credited for discovering the region known today as the Kimberley in Western Australia.

Dampier, who at the time was an acknowledged pirate, first visited the region in 1688. He later returned in 1699 but after an argument with curious aboriginals which led to the death of a native, he was forced to hurriedly depart the area.

Despite this, Dampier’s journals were enough to stimulate interest in the areas rich pearl shell beds. By the late 1870s there was a growing pearling industry in the waters off north-western Australia with the largest base of operations being located in Cossack, about 700km from what was to become Broome.

In 1879, Charles Harper suggested (to the Legislative Council), that Roebuck Bay be set up as a port with sufficient facilities for the pearling industry. Later on, in 1883, John Forrest selected a town site on Roebuck Bay just east of Dampier Creek where three native wells existed and predicted this site would become the Capital of the Kimberley. Later that year, the townsite of Broome was proclaimed and named after the colony’s Governor, Frederick N. Broome. The first sale of town lots took place in October 1886 and two years later Broome was gazetted as a port.

The Fat Years of 1889 to 1891 saw the price of pearl shell escalate to new highs and this established Broome as a port often referred to as the Queen City of the North. By 1898, Broome was the principal cargo port for north Western Australia and by the First World War; the Port of Broome was second only to Fremantle, it was quite an achievement.

During this time, there were many men from the UK who dominated the pearling industry at Roebuck Bay but by 1900 many had retired to England or other destinations to enjoy their earned fortunes. As these men disappeared, they were replaced by younger men from Victoria and New South Wales affected by the economic depression of the nineties.

When World War I was declared in 1914, Broome harboured about 300 pearl luggers and had a population of over 1,000 white men and some 2,000 coloured. After a few months the fleet numbers were halved as men rushed to enlist in the war effort and this negatively affected Broome’s pearling industry.

European markets began to collapse and many thought the industry was coming to an end. During the war years the only additional use found for mother of pearl was for buttons on soldiers’ uniforms. By December 1916 Broome was threatened with economic ruin as the sale of mother of pearl dwindled and enemy ships threatened shipments consigned for the states.

With excess stocks and luggers going to ruin Broome’s economic situation was bleak until when the war ended in 1918 when a different pearling industry emerged. Broome had also suffered extensive damage by the cyclones of 1908, 1910 and especially 1912 and much of the town needed to be rebuilt. Eventually, Broome slowly rebuilt itself into an exciting and economically viable port. By 1920, Broome was a vibrant, thriving pearling industry and the price of pearl shell was at its highest ever.

The influence of the pearling industry, with its cultural melting pot, has greatly helped to create the distinctive character and charm of Broome. South Sea Pearls are recognised as the best in the world and pearling remains one of the town’s major industries also due to the cultured pearl, which revived the industry after its near demise in the late 1950s.

The pearling industry remains a vibrant part of Broome, proudly producing the world’s finest pearls.  And if you would take the time to explore, you’ll discover that Broome is as rich in history as it is in these gems from the sea.  There are lots of other attractions in Broome for people who come to visit this great town.

Broome came up as a result of the discovery of the Pinctada Maxima, largest pearl oyster shell in the world in the Roebuck Bay in 1861. Broome is still a world leader when it comes to the quality of pearls even today.

Festival of Sails

This is an event in which yatches race. It’s a competition of more than 60 vessels. This happens during summer in the second Saturday of April there is the Festival of sails. This takes place at the Marine Parade in Redcliffe. If you want to see what goes down in this event, be at Sutton’s beach. Besides the race there are other activities that also take place, there is lots of food served in stalls, and lots of other entertainment.

Performing Arts Exhibit

On Russell Street in the first weekend in April, there is an event where classical music, ballet, and other forms of new talent in music is showcased. This is a culture rich event. You get to learn about the Australian culture far and wide, and see it in action in this event.

Brookwater Market Event

This is usually at its peaks from September to March of every year. You will experience shopping in a unique manner in this market. There are lots and lots of fresh foods sold here, foods that are locally grown in this great state. Redcliffe Kitefest

This is a kite festival held at the Esplanade that is usually held the third weekend in May each year. It’s an art festival where you get to witness and watch marvelous kites from all over Australia. You get a chance to see the professional handling the kites. There are other activities here such as wine tasting, and a variety of foods served in this festival. Youth Symphony

This is also a cultural event where the Youth Symphony Perform alongside other talented artists. There are also dances presented by young people in this event. It is an event open to the public and you get to enjoy classical music and dance all free of charge. It’s held on Grey Street Cultural Center
